The city of Mission Viejo was once a part of the 52,000 acre Rancho Mission Viejo and is located on land settled in a short lived attempt by a group of friars to establish the Mission San Juan Capistrano and spread the word of Christianity.  The lack of water forced the group to relocate and the land was divided and given to prominent citizens.  The land remained in use as a succession of cattle ranches until 1965 when another attempt to settle the area was more succesful and the Mission Viejo Company was established.  Soon after the first families moved into the new neighbhorhoods and the community has been growing ever sense. Mission Viejo is mainly a residential community, but when you are in Orange County a visit to the are would make a good day trip.  The city was named the "Safest City in the US" in 2007 and is considered one of the largest master planned communities ever built under a single project in the country.  Neighborhoods would sell out before construction ever began on a single home when the area was being developed because of its reputation as the newest, most desirable place to raise a family.  Visitors to the area will enjoy beautifully landscaped city parks on every square mile throughout the city, and there are three golf courses available for all skill levels.  The architecture chosen for Mission Viejo reflects its Spanish history.  Buildings in the area are primarily built with adobe like stucco walls with barrel tile roofs.  This design motif would later be used in the development of the neighboring cities of Irvine and Newport Beach.  An afternoon spent in the city exploring its rich history and taking in the local flavors shoud be on every travelers intinerary.
