Itineraries

Dr. Brian Herman, known locally as “Dr McDreamy,” is an international pioneer in endovascular neurosurgery and acute stroke intervention at Rancho Mirage’s Eisenhower Medical Center. His movie-star looks are enhanced by powering his mountain bike up Rancho Mirage’s trails daily. He creates art installations every year at Burning Man and as a photographer and adventure traveler, he has explored the depths of India, Asia, and Central America. Father of two brilliant children, Mikaela, age 12, and Marley, attending Webb boarding school, age 14, he never forgets to share time with the love of his life, the beautiful physician and artist “Dr. Deb” Windham.

Here is Brian’s 3-day action adventure, each day an intensive cardiovascular workout.

BREAKFAST Gotta kick-start the day with a Chai Latte from Bad Ass Coffee. Every day in Rancho Mirage is a vacation. If I can carve out the time, I am gone for a bike ride up the Clara Burgess Trail. This is fast mountain bike ride over technical sections that rip through the breathtaking Santa Rosa Mountains. Not for beginners and best experienced with a buddy. You must hydrate and take your cell phone for this adventure that could take up an entire day.
LUNCH Next a heart melting lunch at Tommy Bahamas on the El Paseo in Palm Desert. “Dr. Deb” and I come here after a long ride to chill out on the patio and gaze at the mountain views and Palm Springs Valley vista.

LUNCH Vacationing in our town often includes cruising the art galleries like Imago Gallery. They represent world-renowned contemporary artists such as Fletcher Benton, Tony Berlant, Dale Chihuly, Ed Moses, and Donald Sultan to name a few. It's beautiful museum like setting provides a tranquil setting to reflect upon amazing works of art.
DINNER Dinner at Piero’s Acqua Pazza – California Bistro. Catch an glorious sunset on the patio with the mountains nearly encircling your table. The gazpacho is great, but ““Dr. Deb”” and I always go for an Ahi Tower.

BREAKFAST You know it; Bad Ass Coffee and off to the mountains.

Backpacking in the canyons is an amazing trip into hidden oasis with wildlife and so much beauty. Centuries ago, ancestors of the Agua Caliente Cahuilla (pronounced Kaw-we-ah) Indians settled in the Palm Springs region. Now their reservation preserves the largest palm oasis in the world. Hike Palm Canyon; it's 15 miles of one of the great beauty spots in Western North America. Or check out Tahquitz Canyon; it's home to a spectacular 60 foot waterfall (seasonal), rock art, ancient irrigation systems and artifacts. “Dr. Deb” and I are fond of the oasis; we never miss a swim in the chilled water. It's a spiritual rush.

LUNCH I sometimes surprise “Dr. Deb” with a picnic lunch from Bouchee Fine Foods. I’m a fan of their roasted chicken sandwich with roasted red peppers.
DINNER Wally’s Desert Turtle is my favorite restaurant. Their service is the best. It's nice to be treated like an honored guest.

BREAKFAST Rise and shine with the sun. For early mornings, when there is lots of mountain biking ahead, Bristol Farms offers an amazing selection of breakfast noshes. “Dr. Deb” and I love to grab a tea and a scone to go.
LUNCH

Today we’re going see what your made of. Plan to do nothing but mountain bike the Hahn Buena-Vista Trail to the Art Smith Trail; it is not for the weak of mind or body. This 21.4 miles of trails are very rocky and very narrow with steep drop-offs sometimes hundreds of feet below. But a raging good time. If you need to gear up before hitting the trails; I recommend Velo Bum Elite Cyclery – all the bike gear, knowledge and specialty equipment you need.

DINNER Reward yourself with a light meal and the best fresh fish taco’s around. Louis Pagano, who grew up on his father's fishing boat in San Pedro, started the Fisherman’s Market and Grill in Palm Springs and Palm Desert and they serves up only the freshest seafood in the Palm Springs Valley. A great ending to a perfect day in the Palm Springs Valley and Rancho Mirage!
